Getting Ready for Your Laser Tattoo Treatment

Laser tattoo removal, like any other medical procedure, is most effective when properly prepared for. Here are some steps to follow to prepare for your tattoo removal appointment.

  • On the day of your appointment, wear comfortable clothing that will not rub against the tattoo. If the tattoo is on your waistline, wear looser-fitting pants (or sweatpants) and no belt. You don’t want to irritate the area because it will be sensitive for the next few days.
  • Before your appointment, make sure the treated area is clean. If the tattooed area is very hairy, shaving may be a good idea to make the laser technician’s job easier.
  • Confirm with your schedule that you have no plans to go swimming, hot tubbing, or participate in any other activities in the days following your removal treatment. To avoid infection, we recommend that you do not soak the treated area for three days after treatment.
  • Keep nonstick bandages and ointment on hand, such as Aquaphor or Neosporin. You’ll need to bandage your tattoo for three days, with a new bandage for each day.
  • If you smoke, we also recommend that you limit or stop smoking for up to four weeks prior to treatment. Smoking reduces the flow of oxygen, which can delay the healing process.
  • It is critical to keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight for four weeks prior to treatment and to use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunburned skin can aggravate pain and slow the healing process. Most importantly, avoid direct sunlight exposure for at least 48 hours before.
  • After your treatment, make sure to follow our aftercare instructions exactly as they are written. All of our patients will be given aftercare instructions during their tattoo removal appointment.
